Lesson 2 - Fonts & Color

Color  |  SizeType & AttributesSpecial Characters

There are many different things you can do with fonts, but in this instance I am only going to go over the basics. There is a lot more you can do with CSS and DHTML if you choose.  You don't necessarily even need to add anything to make a font appear.  There is a default that will show up as text, but in many cases color, size, and font type are important to many web designers.  The basic font tags would look something like this <font></font>.  That however is only part of the tag.  That really won't do much for you, and if you don't need to specify anything you can just omit them.

Color:

HTML Attributes to Specify Color

If one of the following <BODY> attributes is used, they all should be specified in order to avoid color conflicts; for example, you may assign a backgound color and a visitor may have his/her browser set to display text in the same color, making your page unreadable. All these attributes should be specified in a single <BODY> tag.

<BODY BGCOLOR="#ff6600">
sets the background color for the page as a whole.

<BODY TEXT="#ff6600">
sets the text color for the page as a whole.

<BODY LINK="#ff6600">
sets the unvisited link color for the page as a whole.

<BODY VLINK="#ff6600">
sets the visited link color for the page as a whole.

<BODY ALINK="#ff6600">
sets the activated link color (i.e. the color of the link as users click on it) for the page as a whole.
<FONT COLOR="Red">sample text</FONT>
sets the color of selected text within a page.

TABLE COLOR ATTRIBUTES:

<TABLE BGCOLOR="#ff6600">
sets the background color for an entire table.

<TH BGCOLOR="#ff6600">
sets the background color for one header cell within a table.

<TD BGCOLOR="#ff6600">
sets the background color for one data cell within a table.

Font colors can be declared in many different ways. All you would need to do to replace the color is alter the value to reflect the text color of your preference. Some colors can be named, such as:

Named Colors
aqua

black

blue fuchsia green gray
lime maroon navy olive purple red
Pink silver teal white yellow Violet

Some colors need to be declared in the Hexadecimal (HEX) format.  I have listed the HEX colors below. The number and letter combination for each color is listed in each box for the color in question.  For these colors you would add a # sign in front of the color.

Example creating red font using the HEX code instead of the name: <font color="#ff0000">Your Text Here</font>

Size:

There are many different ways you can declare font size.  You can do that with the H# tags, or just the size variable in the font.  The H# tags are generally used for headings and are  based on how big you want the heading to be.  The biggest is 1 and each number afterwards becomes smaller.

HEADING EXAMPLES

There are 6 heading sizes.  1 being the largest and 6 being the smallest.

Code:  <h1>Heading size 1</h1>
Working Example:

Heading Size 1

Code:  <h2>Heading size 2</h2>
Working Example:

Heading Size 2

Code:  <h3>Heading size 3</h3>
Working Example:

Heading Size 3

Code:  <h4>Heading size 4</h4>
Working Example:

Heading Size 4

FONT SIZE EXAMPLES

There are 7 sizes of font.  1 being the smallest and 7 being the largest.  Larger than that and you may want to go to a graphic instead of a font..

Code:
<font size=1>Font size 1</font>
Working Example: Font Size 1

Code:
<font size=2>Font Size 2</font>
Working Example: Font Size 2
Code:
<font size=3>Font Size 3</font>
Working Example: Font Size 3
Code:
<font size=4>Font Size 4</font>
Working Example: Font Size 4

Font Type & Attributes:

To change the type of font. I.E. from Times New Roman to Arial you would add the face="font name" to your code.

Example: <font face="Arial">This is the Arial font</font>
Example with color and size: <font face="Arial" size=4 color="#993399">This is the Arial font with various attributes </font>

There are other attributes that you can add to fonts as well.  Bold, Underline, and Italic are all commonly used font attributes t hat you may want on your own site.
The Bold Tags are: <b></b>
The Underline Tags are: <u></u>
The Italic Tags are: <i></i>

Special Characters

In this section I have outlined some of the special or ascii characters that are available. In some cases in HTML you may need to use the HTML hard code for it instead of the acutal sybol. When entered into the HTML portion of your website they will show up as the actual symbol when published or previewed. (I.E. !,@,#,$,%, etc)
Please Note: The Hex codes should start with a %. So a hex equivalent for / symbol would be %2f in an HTML link.
